Student Choreography Showcase 2019

Nevada Union High School’s Theatrical Dance Program presents the 18th annual Student Choreography Showcase on Thursday, February 28th at 7:00 p.m., Friday, March 1st at 7:00 p.m., and Saturday, March 2nd at 2:00 p.m. in the Don Baggett Theater, 11761 Ridge Road, Grass Valley.

Twelve student choreographers submitted detailed proposals at the start of the school year, describing how their dance would connect to the show’s theme of “Uplift and Inspire”. They began rehearsals in September, dedicating several weekends to teach and stage their works on a cast of their peers. Before presenting each piece, the choreographers describe their inspiration and choreographic processes, the challenges they overcame, and their artistic vision for how the movement, costuming, and lighting designs they have created reflect the theme of “Uplift and Inspire.”

This year’s Showcase opens with an upbeat musical theatre number from Legally Blonde, choreographed by junior advanced dancer Caitlin McCormick. As the show progresses, the pieces include a broad spectrum of movement styles and music, including a jazzy tribute to Prince’s song “Kiss” by junior Margot Roa-O’Brien, a circus-inspired dance full of tricks and acrobatics by senior Lindsey Woods, and a contemporary dance about Plato’s allegory of “The Cave” by senior Nevada Wadman. The show’s finale includes excerpts from each choreographer’s dance, set to the song “Footloose.”

Ticket prices are $12 or $15, depending on seating location. All seating is reserved. Tickets can be purchased online at www.nevadauniondance.com. Tickets can also be purchased in the Don Baggett Theater lobby on February 22 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. and on February 25-27 from 4:30-6:00 p.m. Remaining tickets will be sold at the box office beginning 2 hours before each performance. Please note, online sales close the morning of the performance to prepare the box office.
